What Really Matters

In the final days before His crucifixion, Jesus is engaged in theological conversation with those who disbelieved the resurrection (see Mark 12:18-27). While these leaders were out to trap Jesus, a scribe was searching to satisfy his inner struggle with righteousness through the law. Can one command possibly be more important than all the others? (v.28) I think the scribe was in essence asking, How can a person truly be right with a holy God? Jesus' answer exposes the scribe’s challenge, which is also humanity’s struggle. Nothing is more important than a right relationship with God, which is found in the loving embrace of the God who calls people into a relationship with Himself.

When loving God wholeheartedly becomes the primary focus of our life, the priority of glorifying God above all else is evident. This is echoed in our desire to live a Christ-centered life. By linking love for one's neighbor to loving God, Jesus establishes an inseparable connection between the vertical (our relationship with God) and horizontal (our relationship with others) aspects of worship and devotion.

Heading into a New Year, I challenge you to live a God-glorifying, Christ-centered life by focusing on two areas: Personal Devotion and Practical Discipleship. Here are a few ways to apply the core values of Glorifying God and Christ-centered worship.
